Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse first-grade students in the world of tea production and the cultural significance of tea in Charleston. Through hands-on activities, students will explore the journey of tea from plantation to cup, while learning essential etiquette and hosting skills for a successful tea party. This experience aims to foster self-directed learning, where students use feedback and reflection to enhance their understanding of manners, teamwork, and thoughtful preparation.

Learning goals

Students will develop informational writing skills by creating an etiquette book and graphic novel-style posters that detail the tea-making process. They will practice self-directed learning through teacher and peer feedback, refining their understanding of tea production and etiquette. Students will engage in collaborative decision-making during the Tea Party Planning Workshop, enhancing their communication skills. Additionally, they will learn and practice manners essential for hosting and attending a tea party, culminating in a real-world application at the Tea Time Manners Banquet.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.7 - Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of "how-to" books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will collaboratively create an etiquette book that includes lessons on hosting a tea party and practicing good manners. They will design graphic novel-style posters illustrating the tea-making process, which will be displayed in the classroom. Additionally, students will create informative posters for the lunchroom that outline proper etiquette and the importance of doing the right thing. These products will be showcased at the tea time manners banquet, where students will apply their learning in a real-world context.

Launch

Begin with a 'Tea Party Planning Workshop' where students collaborate to brainstorm themes, decorations, and menu items for their tea party. Facilitate collective decision-making and resource management by allowing students to vote on their favorite ideas. Follow this with a 'Tea Tasting and Etiquette Extravaganza' where students sample different teas and practice table manners under the guidance of an etiquette coach, integrating sensory exploration with lessons on grace and courtesy. Finally, host a 'Tea Discovery Day' with interactive stations simulating the journey of tea from plantation to cup, engaging students in sensory experiences, role-playing, and storytelling about tea history.

Exhibition

Students will host a "Tea Time Manners Banquet," inviting parents, community partners, and peers to experience their learning journey. At the banquet, students will present their etiquette books and graphic novel-style posters, showcasing their understanding of tea production and hosting customs. They will demonstrate their table manners and share stories about the history and journey of tea, culminating in a collective tea tasting experience that highlights their thoughtful preparation and communication skills.
