Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage Grade 8 students in a collaborative and creative process to design an English board game that enhances language skills. This project allows students to apply their communication and collaboration competencies in a real-world context, fostering deeper learning through hands-on experiences. By co-designing the board game, students will develop content expertise while creating a fun and educational tool for their peers and teachers.

Learning goals

The learning goals for this project are to enhance students' English language skills through the design and creation of a board game, focusing on vocabulary, grammar, and communication. Students will practice effective communication and collaboration by working in teams to co-design the game, making shared decisions and resolving conflicts. They will develop content expertise by applying their language knowledge in a real-world context, aiming to create a product that is both educational and engaging for players.
Competencies
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.

Products

Throughout the project, students will collaboratively design and develop an English board game that incorporates language skills and engaging gameplay mechanics. They will create detailed game instructions and prepare a presentation to showcase their board game to peers and teachers. By the end of the project, students will have a polished board game ready for exhibition, reflecting their understanding of effective communication, collaboration, and content expertise.

Launch

Begin the project by introducing the concept of board games and their elements through an interactive session where students play a simple English board game. Use this opportunity to highlight effective communication and collaboration skills, emphasizing the use of imperative sentences. Encourage students to observe and discuss what makes the game engaging and educational, setting the stage for their own design process. This shared experience will spark creativity and establish a foundation for the project.

Exhibition

At the end of the project, students will host an interactive exhibition where they present their English board games to teachers and peers. Each group will demonstrate how their game is played, highlighting the language skills it targets and the creative elements incorporated. Attendees will have the opportunity to play the games, providing feedback that students can use for final reflections. This exhibition will serve as a platform for students to showcase their communication and collaboration skills, as well as the quality of their product.
