Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage students in exploring and understanding the natural world around them through hands-on activities and observations. By developing a foldable flora and fauna logbook, students will document their findings and deepen their knowledge of local ecosystems, soil types, and weather patterns. This project encourages students to observe, record, and reflect on the characteristics of plants and animals they encounter, fostering a connection to their environment and promoting environmental stewardship.

Learning goals

Students will identify and describe the layers and types of soil, recognize local flora and fauna, and understand the importance of plants and garden care. They will explore the impact of climate on ecosystems and learn about solid waste management. Through hands-on activities and regular visits to a vegetable garden, students will document their observations in a foldable logbook, illustrating the characteristics of plants and animals in their environment.
Standards
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.1.2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
  • Common Core - CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.1.4: Describe people, places, things, and events with relevant details, expressing ideas and feelings clearly.
  • NGSS - 2-LS4-1: Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a foldable flora and fauna logbook, documenting their observations and learnings about local plants, animals, soil, and ecosystems. Each logbook will include detailed illustrations and descriptions, reflecting their understanding of the characteristics and importance of these natural elements. Students will also participate in seven individual evaluative activities, culminating in a final exhibition where their logbooks are displayed, showcasing their ability to recognize and illustrate the flora and fauna of their environment.

Launch

To launch the project, students will participate in an interactive classroom activity where they explore a mini-garden setup with various plants and soil samples. They will use magnifying glasses to observe and sketch the flora and fauna they find, creating initial entries in their foldable logbooks. This activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for their ongoing exploration of the environment, encouraging them to ask questions and make predictions about the ecosystems they will study.

Exhibition

Students will create a classroom exhibition showcasing their foldable flora and fauna logbooks. Each student will display their logbook, highlighting their observations and illustrations of local plants and animals. The exhibition will include interactive stations where students can present their findings on soil types, garden care, and ecosystems. This will be accompanied by visual displays of the climate and solid waste management concepts they have explored. The exhibition will be set up for other classes and school staff to visit, allowing students to share their learning journey.
