Purpose

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of Asian cultures while enhancing their language arts skills through immersive, collaborative experiences. By engaging with diverse cultural perspectives, students will develop intercultural competencies crucial for effective communication in a globalized world. Through hands-on activities, expert interactions, and reflective practices, students will cultivate a nuanced appreciation of cultural diversity, enabling them to navigate and contribute to multicultural environments confidently.

Learning goals

Students will enhance their communication skills by exploring and understanding diverse Asian cultural perspectives, aligning with CCSS Language Arts standards. They will develop intercultural competence through collaborative activities and role-playing scenarios, which require negotiation and problem-solving. Additionally, students will refine their ability to reflect on and articulate their learning experiences through digital journaling and portfolio creation.

Products

Students will collaboratively create multimedia presentations that explore specific aspects of Asian cultures, integrating their research and insights gained from guest lectures. They will also produce digital journals documenting their reflections and learning progress throughout the project. Each group will design an interactive exhibit for the 'Asian Cultural Showcase,' featuring cultural artifacts, role-play scenarios, and culinary insights. Finally, students will compile their work into a comprehensive portfolio, including a reflective essay on their enhanced communication skills and cultural understanding.

Launch

To kick off the project, organize an 'Asian Cuisine Tasting Experience' where students sample dishes from various Asian countries. This immersive activity will be followed by a guided discussion on how food reflects cultural values and traditions, sparking curiosity and engagement. This launch will set the stage for students to explore and appreciate the diversity of Asian cultures through a sensory and interactive experience.

Exhibition

Students will organize an 'Asian Cultural Showcase,' presenting their projects and portfolios to classmates, teachers, and community members, including the university professors who contributed to the project. This event will feature interactive displays, cultural performances, and presentations that highlight students' understanding and appreciation of Asian cultures. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with students, ask questions, and provide feedback, creating a vibrant exchange of ideas and cultural appreciation.
