Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse first-grade students in the world of tea production and etiquette, fostering their informational writing skills through hands-on experiences. By exploring the history of Charleston tea, students will engage in shared research and writing activities, culminating in a tea time manners banquet. This project encourages self-directed learning by allowing students to reflect on their manners and hosting skills, while collaborating with community partners to deepen their understanding of tea's journey from plantation to cup.

Learning goals

Students will develop informational writing skills by researching and documenting the journey of tea from plantation to cup, creating a nonfiction text about tea production and etiquette. They will practice self-directed learning by using feedback and reflection to enhance their understanding of hosting and attending a tea party. Through hands-on experiences, students will learn essential tea party manners and etiquette, culminating in hosting a tea time manners banquet. Additionally, they will engage in collaborative decision-making and resource management during the Tea Party Planning Workshop.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.1.7 - Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of "how-to" books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a collaborative informational book detailing the history and production of tea in Charleston. They will also design and produce invitations for their tea time manners banquet, incorporating lessons on etiquette and presentation. Additionally, students will craft personalized tea party menus and decorations, showcasing their understanding of the essential elements of a successful tea party.

Launch

Begin the project with a "Tea Party Planning Workshop" where students collaborate to decide on themes, decorations, and menu items for their upcoming tea party. Encourage them to make collective decisions and manage resources effectively. Follow this with a "Tea Tasting and Etiquette Extravaganza," where students will sample different teas and practice table manners under the guidance of an etiquette coach, blending lessons on grace and courtesy with sensory exploration. Finally, host a "Tea Discovery Day" with interactive stations that simulate the journey of tea from plantation to cup, including a sensory experience with tea leaves, role-play activities, and storytelling about the history of tea.

Exhibition

Students will host a tea time manners banquet, inviting family members and community partners to experience the culmination of their learning. During the event, students will demonstrate their knowledge by explaining the journey of tea from plantation to cup and showcasing their informational writing projects. They will also practice the etiquette skills they've learned, serving tea and snacks while engaging in polite conversation. This exhibition will highlight their ability to apply their research, writing, and social skills in a real-world setting.
