Purpose

The purpose of this project is to engage high school students in a hands-on learning experience that integrates physics and engineering principles through the design and construction of a paper bridge. By applying concepts such as tension, compression, and load distribution, students will deepen their understanding of real-world applications of physics while developing self-directed learning skills. The project encourages collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity, culminating in a community-focused exhibition that showcases their innovative solutions and fosters connections with local experts.

Learning goals

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of physics principles such as tension, compression, and load distribution, applying these concepts to the design and construction of a paper bridge. They will enhance their self-directed learning skills by utilizing feedback and self-reflection to refine their designs and strategies. Products

Students will create a scale model of a bridge using recycled materials, demonstrating their understanding of physics and engineering principles. Throughout the project, they will maintain a reflection journal to document their learning journey, challenges, and insights. Additionally, students will develop posters that detail their design process, which will be displayed alongside their bridge models at the Bridge Builders Expo.

Launch

Kick off the project with a dynamic 'Physics in Action' workshop, where students engage in interactive demonstrations of tension, compression, and load distribution using simple materials. Facilitate small group activities that challenge students to intuitively explore these forces, setting the stage for their bridge design project. Conclude with a collaborative discussion to connect these principles to real-world engineering challenges, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm for the upcoming bridge-building endeavor.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a 'Bridge Builders Expo' hosted at the local science museum. Here, they will display their bridge models and accompanying posters that detail their design process, physics principles applied, and material choices. This event will allow students to engage with museum visitors and local engineers, discussing their work and receiving feedback. The expo will serve as a platform for students to articulate their learning journey and showcase their achievements in a real-world setting.
