Purpose

This project aims to immerse students in the transformative period following the fall of feudalism, exploring the Renaissance, Reformation, and the rise of absolute monarchs through hands-on activities. By integrating art, history, and mathematics, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the cultural, political, and economic shifts that shaped modern Europe. The project encourages self-directed learning and critical thinking, fostering a sense of identity and belonging as students engage with historical narratives and create meaningful connections to their community.

Learning goals

Students will explore the transformative period following the collapse of feudalism, focusing on the Renaissance, Reformation, and the rise of absolute monarchs, while developing critical thinking and effective communication skills. They will create a digital timeline and multi-paragraph essay to demonstrate their understanding of Europe's political, cultural, and economic evolution. Through collaboration with an art museum and reflective journaling, students will deepen their self-directed learning, engage in critical reflection, and establish a sense of identity and belonging within historical contexts.
Standards
  • [Massachusetts] 8.G.C.9 - Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres, and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.C.9 - Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a digital timeline using multimedia elements to highlight key transformations in Europe post-feudalism, integrating videos, images, and text. They will also craft multi-paragraph essays analyzing the impacts of the Renaissance, Reformation, and rise of absolute monarchs, incorporating feedback for revision. Additionally, students will produce artwork inspired by Renaissance styles during a museum workshop, culminating in a virtual exhibition shared with the school community.

Launch

Begin the project with an interactive map study where students identify key European regions impacted by the fall of feudalism, followed by a group discussion on the geographical shifts and their implications. Introduce a video overview of the Renaissance, Reformation, and rise of absolute monarchs, prompting students to jot down initial thoughts and questions. Conclude the launch with a visit to a local art museum for a guided tour of Renaissance art, setting the stage for students to explore the cultural transformations that followed feudalism's collapse.

Exhibition

Students will present their digital timelines in a virtual exhibition, inviting parents, teachers, and community members to explore the multimedia elements that showcase Europe's transformation post-feudalism. The exhibition will include student-led presentations, where they articulate their learning journey and the insights gained from their research on the Renaissance, Reformation, and absolute monarchs. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in discussions with students, providing feedback and fostering a deeper understanding of the historical changes and their impact on modern society.
