Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse students in the study of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity through hands-on, collaborative experiences that foster a deeper understanding of religious diversity and its impact on global society. By engaging with community partners and participating in interactive exhibits and discussions, students will develop critical thinking skills, enhance their academic mindset, and build content expertise. This project aims to cultivate effective communication and collaboration among students, allowing them to explore personal reflections and share their insights with the wider community.

Learning goals

Students will develop a nuanced understanding of the internal diversity within Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, exploring both macro and micro levels. They will enhance their reading skills, vocabulary, and note-taking abilities while engaging in sequencing and timelines in history. Through collaborative projects and community engagement, students will strengthen their critical thinking, effective communication, and self-directed learning competencies. They will reflect on how religious understanding contributes to social and emotional growth, fostering a sense of identity and belonging.
Standards
  • [National Council for the Social Studies] D2.Rel.2.9-12 - Describe and analyze examples of how religions are internally diverse at both macro levels (sects and divisions within traditions) and micro levels (differences within specific religious communities).
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.
  • Collaboration - Students co-design projects with peers, exercise shared-decision making, strengthen relational agency, resolve conflict, and assume leadership roles.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a series of interactive digital timelines that detail significant historical events and figures from Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, providing an engaging exploration of each religion's evolution and global impact. Additionally, they will design a community mural project, depicting scenes and symbols from the major world religions, which will serve as a visual dialogue starter among viewers. These products will be showcased during the World Religions Fair and Faiths Through Art gallery night, allowing students to present their work and insights to the school community and beyond.

Launch

Begin the project with an 'Interfaith Dialogue Panel' where students engage with community leaders from Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. Encourage students to ask questions and discuss the role of faith in contemporary society. Follow this with a 'Cultural Immersion Day' featuring hands-on workshops led by community partners, allowing students to experience traditional crafts, music, and food from each religion. Conclude the launch with a 'Religious Storytelling Circle,' where guest speakers share personal stories and insights, providing cultural context and sparking curiosity.

Exhibition

Students will organize a 'World Religions Fair' where they set up interactive booths for Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, featuring artifacts, symbols, and multimedia presentations that engage visitors through hands-on activities. Additionally, they will host a 'Faiths Through Art' gallery night, displaying visual reflections and digital collages, inviting community members to discuss the artwork while enjoying themed snacks and music. These exhibitions will allow students to share their learning and insights with the broader community, fostering dialogue and appreciation for religious diversity.
