Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse 5th-grade students in the study of athlete leaders who have championed social change, fostering a deeper understanding of their strategies, challenges, and impacts. Through hands-on activities, collaborative discussions, and creative reflections, students will develop critical thinking skills and learn to appreciate diverse perspectives. This project aims to inspire students to recognize their own potential for leadership and advocacy in addressing social issues, while also meeting educational standards and competencies.

Learning goals

Students will develop a deep understanding of how athlete leaders have historically and contemporarily advocated for social change, analyzing their strategies, challenges, and impacts. They will engage in collaborative activities and discussions that foster critical thinking, empathy, and effective communication skills. Through creative reflection and multimedia presentations, students will demonstrate their ability to synthesize information and articulate their insights on the role of athletes in social movements, while connecting these lessons to broader societal issues and personal growth.

Products

Students will create a virtual museum exhibit using platforms like Google Slides or Padlet, showcasing artifacts, stories, and multimedia elements about athlete leaders and their contributions to social change. Throughout the project, students will also develop multimedia presentations or digital posters for the 'Athlete Advocacy Showcase,' highlighting the stories and impact of these leaders. Additionally, students will produce creative pieces such as poems, drawings, or speeches for the 'Reflection Circle,' capturing their personal learning journey. These products will be shared with peers, parents, and community members, fostering a sense of community and shared learning.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic 'Social Change Scavenger Hunt' where students explore interactive stations around the classroom or school. Each station will feature a different athlete leader's story and their contributions to social change, providing students with clues that deepen their understanding of the essential question. This hands-on activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for the exploration of athlete leaders' roles in social movements, encouraging students to actively engage with the content from the outset.

Exhibition

Students will host an 'Athlete Advocacy Showcase,' where they present their multimedia presentations or digital posters that highlight athlete leaders' stories and contributions to social change. This event will invite parents and community members to engage with the students' work, fostering a broader understanding and appreciation of the athletes' impact. The showcase will serve as a platform for students to articulate their insights and celebrate their learning journey, creating a vibrant community dialogue around the themes of leadership and social change.
