Purpose

The purpose of this project is to immerse 5th-grade students in the exploration of human rights through active storytelling and collaboration. By engaging with community partners, students will gain firsthand insights into human rights advocacy, fostering a deeper understanding of democratic principles and citizenship responsibilities. Through the creation and performance of short plays, students will critically analyze and illustrate fundamental human rights, developing skills in empathy, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Learning goals

Students will develop a deep understanding of fundamental human rights and democratic principles, including equality before the law and responsibilities of citizenship. They will enhance their storytelling skills by crafting narratives that illustrate human rights themes, using plot, character, and setting. Through collaboration with peers and community partners, students will build positive relationships, practice empathy, and engage in critical thinking to analyze and present human rights scenarios. They will demonstrate mastery in articulating their learning through performances and reflective discussions, fostering a commitment to self-improvement and active citizenship.

Products

Students will collaboratively create short plays that depict various human rights scenarios, showcasing their understanding of democratic principles and citizenship responsibilities. Each play will be developed through a process of scriptwriting, peer critique, and revision to ensure the narratives effectively illustrate human rights themes. The final products will be performed at the 'Human Rights Storytelling Festival,' where students will engage with an audience of peers, families, and community members, receiving feedback and celebrating their learning journey.

Launch

Begin the project with a dynamic 'Human Rights Discovery Day,' where students engage in interactive stations featuring storytelling, art, and role-playing activities. These stations will be led by community partners who specialize in human rights advocacy, providing students with diverse perspectives and insights. This immersive experience will spark curiosity and set the stage for deeper exploration of human rights themes throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will showcase their short plays at the 'Human Rights Storytelling Festival,' inviting families, community members, and local activists to join. This event will provide a platform for students to perform their narratives, highlighting various human rights scenarios they have explored. Attendees can engage in dialogue with students, offering feedback and celebrating the students' understanding and creativity in illustrating human rights themes.
