Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage kindergarten students in exploring diverse perspectives through the context of toys and play. By participating in hands-on activities such as creating and exchanging handmade toys, students will practice empathy, active listening, and self-reflection. This project aims to cultivate an appreciation for different viewpoints, enhance critical thinking, and foster a sense of community and belonging. Through interactions with local artisans and the culminating Toy Parade, students will connect classroom learning to real-world experiences, deepening their understanding of what makes a toy special to different people.

Learning goals

Students will develop empathy and understanding by exploring diverse perspectives on toys through interviews and storytelling. They will enhance their communication skills by asking open-ended questions and actively listening to peers. Students will express creativity and self-reflection by designing unique toys and articulating their significance. They will engage in critical thinking by analyzing the historical and cultural importance of toys from different eras. Through collaboration with community artisans, students will gain insights into craftsmanship and the value of handmade toys.

Products

Students will create handmade toys at the Toy Creation Station using various craft materials, allowing them to express their creativity and individual perspectives. These toys will be exchanged during a toy swap event, fostering an appreciation for diverse preferences among classmates. Additionally, students will prepare for the Toy Parade by crafting signs that highlight what makes their toy special, culminating in a community showcase.

Launch

Kick off the unit with a 'Toy Detective Adventure' where students embark on an exploratory journey through different stations featuring toys from various eras. Each station provides clues about the historical and cultural significance of the toys, encouraging students to deduce what makes each toy unique and why it was cherished by children of the past. This engaging activity will spark curiosity and set the stage for exploring perspectives and preferences in toys throughout the unit.

Exhibition

Students will participate in a lively 'Toy Parade,' proudly showcasing their handmade toys as they walk through the school or community center. Each student will carry signs explaining what makes their toy special, accompanied by music to enhance the celebratory atmosphere. This event will not only display their creations but also offer an opportunity for students to articulate their learning and perspectives to an audience of peers, teachers, and community members.
