Purpose

This project empowers students to address literacy challenges by creating a free local library, fostering a love for reading and storytelling. Students will explore global literacy issues and develop practical solutions to support literacy in their community. By collaborating with community partners and organizing a Literacy Celebration Fair, students will actively share books and strategies, enhancing their communication skills and critical thinking abilities.

Learning goals

Students will develop critical thinking skills by planning and creating a free local library, analyzing literacy challenges, and exploring solutions through diverse cultural stories. They will enhance communication skills by collaborating with peers and community partners, creating audio-books, and designing bookmarks to share strategies for overcoming reading challenges. Through these activities, students will effectively engage with their school and local community, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for literacy's role in overcoming learning challenges.
Competencies
  • Critical Thinker - Thinks deeply and makes informed decisions to create solutions or new understanding supported by relevant and reliable evidence.
  • Effective Communicator - Engages diverse audiences respectfully by exchanging ideas and information responsibly, listening actively, speaking and writing clearly, and using print and digital media appropriately.

Products

Students will collaboratively create audio-books that narrate stories addressing literacy challenges and solutions, and design bookmarks featuring strategies to overcome reading difficulties. These bookmarks will be shared during the Literacy Celebration Fair. Additionally, students will curate a collection of books for a community book drive, contributing to the establishment of a free little community library. Each student will present their audio-book and bookmark to the school community, fostering a sense of accomplishment and shared learning.

Launch

Begin the project with a 'Community Library Creation Day' where students collaborate to design and build their free little library. They will brainstorm ideas for its structure, location, and decoration, ensuring it reflects the diverse cultures and stories they will explore. This hands-on activity will set the foundation for their book drive and literacy celebration, emphasizing the importance of sharing books to overcome learning challenges in their community.

Exhibition

Organize a 'Literacy Celebration Fair' where students unveil their newly created free little library and present their audio-books and bookmarks to peers, teachers, and families. Include interactive stations that demonstrate reading challenges and solutions, and provide opportunities for attendees to contribute books to the library. Collaborate with community partners like the public library and local bookstore to enrich the event with additional resources and support. Encourage students to actively engage visitors, sharing their experiences and the impact of their project on the community.
