Purpose

Students will embark on a community walk to observe and document their surroundings, using specific language to describe the elements that shape their community's identity. Through this experiential learning activity, they will connect these observations to their own personal stories, reflecting on how their community's history and culture influence their identity. This process will culminate in the creation of an "I am from" poem, allowing students to express their unique identity and sense of belonging. The activity encourages critical thinking, self-directed learning, and fosters a sense of community as students share their poems and experiences with peers.

Learning goals

Students will explore their community through a guided walk, using descriptive language to capture its essence and reflect on how these elements shape their personal and collective identities. They will engage in critical reflection to connect aspects of their community's history and culture to their own life stories. By synthesizing observations and reflections, students will draft an "I am from" poem, demonstrating self-directed learning and critical thinking skills. Students will also participate in peer feedback sessions to refine their poems and build a sense of community by sharing their experiences.

Products

Students will create a personalized "I Am From" poem that incorporates detailed vocabulary and cultural elements identified during a community walk. They will document their observations through sketches or photographs, which will serve as inspiration for their poems. Additionally, students will develop a reflective journal entry analyzing how their community's history and culture contribute to their personal identity. These products will be shared in a class showcase, where students will present their work and engage in peer feedback, fostering a supportive community environment.

Launch

Start the lesson with a community walk, encouraging students to capture notes and photographs of landmarks, street art, and community spaces that resonate with them. Prompt them to consider how these elements reflect their community's identity and culture. Back in the classroom, facilitate a group discussion where students share their observations, linking them to their personal stories and identities. This activity will lay the groundwork for writing an "I am from" poem, allowing students to explore the connection between their community and their individual identities.

Exhibition

Students will host a community walk and poetry reading event to conclude the lesson. They will guide participants through selected community locations, using descriptive language to share insights on how these places connect to their identities. At each stop, students will read their "I Am From" poems, highlighting personal stories and cultural elements. This exhibition invites community members to engage in dialogue and reflection, fostering a shared understanding of diverse identities.
