Purpose

The purpose of this project is to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity within the school community by engaging students in hands-on, real-world learning experiences. Through interviews, storytelling, and creative expression, students will explore how diverse cultural backgrounds contribute to shaping community identity. This project aims to build students' critical thinking, self-directed learning, and academic mindset by encouraging them to reflect on their own identities and the identities of others, promoting civic virtues and democratic principles. Ultimately, the project seeks to create a sense of belonging and shared narrative, celebrating the rich tapestry of cultural identities present in the school.

Learning goals

Students will develop and refine their interview and active listening skills to gather diverse cultural narratives from faculty members. They will engage in critical thinking and problem-solving by exploring how different cultural backgrounds contribute to the community's identity. Through self-directed learning, students will reflect on their own cultural identities and those of others, fostering a sense of belonging and academic mindset. Finally, they will collaborate to create a community mural and digital storytelling project, demonstrating their understanding of cultural diversity and its impact on community identity.

Products

Throughout this learning experience, students will create a digital storytelling project that captures the cultural narratives of faculty members, culminating in a multimedia presentation. Additionally, they will collaboratively design and paint a community mural that visually represents the diverse cultural identities and stories shared during the interviews. These products will be showcased at the Storytelling Festival, where students will perform live readings or presentations, integrating music, visuals, and interactive elements to celebrate the school's cultural diversity.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Storytelling Circle' event where faculty members share personal anecdotes about their cultural heritage. This will be followed by students sharing their own stories, creating a shared narrative of community identity. This interactive event will set the stage for the project, fostering a sense of connection and curiosity among students as they prepare to explore the diverse cultural identities within their school community.

Exhibition

Host a 'Storytelling Festival' where students showcase their digital storytelling projects, incorporating live readings, music, visuals, and interactive elements. Invite the school community, including faculty, students, and parents, to celebrate the diverse cultural identities and stories uncovered during the project. Encourage audience participation and feedback to create a dynamic and engaging atmosphere that highlights the collaborative efforts of the students.
