Purpose

Through this engaging two-week project, students will explore the fascinating world of kings, queens, and royal families while cultivating critical thinking and self-expression through reflections and artistic creations. Kindergarteners will develop their understanding of leadership and government in a fun and interactive manner by comparing and contrasting adventures and experiences of characters from familiar stories. This project will foster global awareness, allowing young learners to see the relevance of kings and queens in today's world, simultaneously nurturing their sense of social and economic equity.

Learning goals

Kindergarten students will explore the concept of kings and queens through familiar stories, engaging in activities that compare and contrast characters' experiences. They will identify and describe royal objects, enhancing their understanding of royal dynamics and cultural significance. Students will learn to express their thoughts on leadership and family through artistic reflection. By participating in a royal-themed scavenger hunt, they will recognize the socio-political aspects of royal families, developing a deeper understanding of public policy and social equity.

Products

Throughout the project, students will create a variety of art pieces and digital collages depicting royal-themed scenes and characters, fostering global awareness of kings and queens today. By the end, students will collaboratively produce a royal-themed gallery that showcases stories and objects from their scavenger hunt, each accompanied by reflection cards that articulate their understanding and opinions on leadership and family. Through this process, they gain insights into the advantages and disadvantages of being part of a royal family, highlighting the diversity of perspectives around royalty in contemporary society.

Launch

Gather the students for a royal-themed read-aloud session to immerse them in the world of kings and queens. Use stories like "King Midas and the Golden Touch" or "The Princess and the Pea" to spark curiosity and conversation about royal characters and their adventures. Encourage students to wear simple crowns or dress-ups to enhance the immersive experience, setting the stage for the exploration of the essential question, "What Are Kings and Queens?"

Exhibition

At the end of the two-week project, students will participate in a Royal Family Gallery Walk in the kindergarten classroom, where they present their royal-themed stories and drawings to peers and teachers. Display boards will feature their reflections on leadership and family, highlighting insights they gained from studying kings and queens. Family members and community partners will be invited to admire the students' art and engage with them in discussions about modern kings and queens around the world.
