Purpose

Students will explore the intersection of art and social issues by creating multimedia installations that utilize digital tools to express their perspectives on climate change's impact on local ecosystems. This project encourages students to engage deeply with the elements of art while developing self-directed learning skills through feedback and reflection. By collaborating with local art galleries and showcasing their work both in-person and online, students will connect with the community and participate in meaningful discussions about their chosen social issues.

Learning goals

Students will develop proficiency in digital media tools to create impactful multimedia installations that communicate social issues effectively. They will analyze and apply the elements of art to convey complex messages, fostering a deeper understanding of how art can influence public perception and awareness. Through self-directed learning, students will refine their work based on feedback and reflection, enhancing their ability to critically evaluate artistic expression and its societal impact.
Standards
  • [National Core Arts Standards] Anchor Standard 7 - Perceive and analyze artistic work.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create a multimedia installation that combines video, digital art, and soundscapes to explore the impact of climate change on local ecosystems. This installation will be showcased in a local art gallery, providing an opportunity for public engagement and dialogue. Additionally, students will develop a digital portfolio that documents their creative process, including sketches, research, and reflections, which will be featured in an online 'Gallery of Voices' to reach a broader audience.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Creative Kickoff' workshop where students form small groups to brainstorm and sketch initial ideas for their multimedia installations. Encourage them to focus on how the elements of art can effectively highlight a chosen social issue. Facilitate group discussions to inspire creativity and collaboration, and provide access to digital tools for initial experimentation. This session sets the stage for students to explore and express their perspectives through art, laying the groundwork for their multimedia projects.

Exhibition

Students will present their multimedia installations at a local art gallery, engaging the community in conversations about the social issues depicted in their work. Additionally, the 'Gallery of Voices' will host an online exhibition, where a global audience can view the students' creations and participate in live discussions through chat or comment sections. This dual exhibition format ensures a broad reach and diverse feedback, enriching the students' learning experience and impact.
