Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage 7th-grade students in exploring the dynamic interplay between tradition and modernization in contemporary China. Through hands-on activities, cultural exchanges, and multimedia projects, students will deepen their understanding of Chinese society, drawing connections between historical influences and current transformations. This project encourages critical thinking, self-directed learning, and effective communication, as students collaborate and reflect on their findings, ultimately presenting their insights to the community.

Learning goals

Students will explore and analyze how the lives of ordinary people in China reflect the interplay between tradition and modernization. They will apply critical thinking to create timelines and multimedia presentations that illustrate significant societal changes and the impact of China's 3 C's: Confucianism, Communism, and Capitalism. Through cultural exchange activities, students will enhance their understanding of cultural preservation and modernization, developing effective communication skills by presenting their findings. They will also engage in self-directed learning, using feedback and reflection to deepen their knowledge and personal connection to the subject matter.
Standards
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] 2-AP-10 - Use flowcharts and/or pseudocode to address complex problems as algorithms.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.7.EE.B.4 - Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by reasoning about the quantities.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.Math.Content.7.G.A.2 - Draw (freehand, with ruler and protractor, and with technology) geometric shapes with given conditions. Focus on constructing triangles from three measures of angles or sides, noticing when the conditions determine a unique triangle, more than one triangle, or no triangle.
  • [Computer Science Teachers Association] 2-AP-12 - Design and iteratively develop programs that combine control structures, including nested loops and compound conditionals.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-PS4-1 - Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.
  • Content Expertise - Students develop key competencies, skills, and dispositions with ample opportunities to apply knowledge and engage in work that matters to them.
  • Effective Communication - Students practice listening to understand, communicating with empathy, and share their learning through exhibiting, presenting and reflecting on their work.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a mural that visually represents the balance between tradition and modernization in China, incorporating symbols and imagery from their cultural exchange experiences and insights from the Discovery Atlas film. Additionally, they will develop a multimedia presentation using profiles of ordinary Chinese people to showcase their understanding of this balance. These products will be shared during the 'China Through Our Eyes' showcase, allowing students to present their findings to parents, teachers, and community members.

Launch

Begin the project with an immersive virtual reality tour of modern and historical sites in China, allowing students to experience the juxtaposition of tradition and modernization firsthand. Follow this with a class discussion where students share their initial impressions and questions about the balance between the old and the new in Chinese society. This activity will set the stage for deeper exploration and inquiry throughout the project.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'China Through Our Eyes' showcase, where they present their multimedia projects to parents, teachers, and community members. This exhibition will feature their collaborative mural and individual presentations, highlighting their insights into the balance between tradition and modernization in China. Attendees will engage with students through Q&A sessions, allowing for deeper discussion and reflection on the cultural exchange experiences and the Discovery Atlas film insights.
