Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to equip students with the skills to effectively utilize Sooth.fyi, a specialized search engine, to enhance their research capabilities. Through hands-on exploration and collaboration, students will develop strategies to overcome research challenges and ensure the credibility of their sources. By engaging in critical reflection and peer feedback, students will refine their research techniques, deepen their understanding of complex topics, and create meaningful academic projects that reflect their self-directed learning and critical thinking skills.

Learning goals

Students will develop proficiency in using Sooth.fyi to enhance their research skills, focusing on gathering reliable and credible information. They will apply critical thinking to evaluate the quality and depth of their research findings, utilizing specialized search engine features to refine techniques and improve academic projects. Through self-directed learning, students will monitor their progress, incorporate feedback, and engage in reflective practices to build self-knowledge and establish a sense of identity and belonging within their academic community.
Standards
  • [New York] ELA.EE.W.9-10.7 - Conduct research projects to answer questions posed by self and others using multiple sources of information.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Throughout the learning experience, students will create a collection of at least three articles on Sooth.fyi, showcasing their research skills and ability to gather reliable information. They will also develop slide decks to present their findings and insights, sharing these with peers and staff for feedback and critique. By the end of the lesson, students will have refined their research techniques and improved their academic projects through the use of specialized search engines, demonstrating their ability to overcome challenges in research and find credible sources.

Launch

To kick off the learning experience, the teacher will initiate a dynamic group activity where students brainstorm potential research topics related to their community interests using a collaborative digital whiteboard. This activity will set the stage for exploring the capabilities of Sooth.fyi as a specialized search engine. Students will then use Sooth.fyi to conduct initial searches on their chosen topics, aiming to identify credible sources and gather preliminary insights. This hands-on approach will introduce students to the platform's features and encourage them to start building their research collections.

Exhibition

Students will present their research findings through slide decks that highlight their collections created on Sooth.fyi. Each student will share their slide decks with peers and staff, focusing on the strategies they used to overcome research challenges and the key features of Sooth.fyi that enhanced their research process. The exhibition will include a Q&A session where students can discuss the impact of using specialized search engines on their research quality and depth.
