Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage kindergarten students in a hands-on, real-world project that helps them understand how to make thoughtful choices based on needs and wants while shopping for family gifts. Through interactive activities such as role-playing and creating a 'Family Gift Chart,' students will develop critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. This project encourages students to explore and articulate their decision-making process, fostering deeper learning and personal growth.

Learning goals

Students will understand how to differentiate between needs and wants, making informed decisions on gift selections for family members. They will practice collaboration and communication by discussing their choices in small groups and engaging with a community partner. Through role-play and feedback sessions, students will refine their critical thinking and creative contribution skills, ensuring their gift selections are thoughtful and considerate.

Products

Students will create a personalized 'Family Gift Chart' with pictures or drawings to represent each family member and the selected gifts based on their needs and wants. They will participate in a role-play shopping activity at the Santa Shop, where they will make gift selections and articulate their choices. Additionally, students will engage in a reflection circle to share their gift decisions and reasoning, fostering an understanding of balancing needs and wants.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Gift Detective Adventure' where students transform into detectives to explore a mock store setup in the classroom. They will identify items that align with their family members' needs and wants, using magnifying glasses and detective hats for added fun. In small groups, students will discuss their findings and share ideas, fostering collaboration and communication from the start.

Exhibition

Students will visit the Santa Shop to exhibit their understanding of making choices based on needs and wants. During this visit, they will present their selected gifts to a representative from the Santa Shop, explaining their decision-making process. This real-world interaction allows students to showcase their learning and receive feedback on how well their choices align with the needs and wants of their family members.
