Purpose

This project aims to immerse first-grade students in a rich, multicultural exploration of Christmas traditions, fostering foundational reading skills through engaging, hands-on activities. By collaborating with peers, community partners, and utilizing library resources, students will develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of global diversity. Through creating and presenting their own artwork and written summaries, students will enhance their communication skills and critical thinking, while building confidence and a sense of belonging within their learning community.

Learning goals

Students will develop foundational reading strategies to fluently read and comprehend informational texts, focusing on Christmas traditions from around the world. They will enhance their ability to conduct collaborative research and synthesize information into creative summaries and artwork. Through peer feedback and self-reflection, students will refine their work, building self-knowledge and confidence. Additionally, they will practice effective communication by presenting their findings and engaging with community partners, fostering a sense of belonging and cultural awareness.

Products

Students will collaboratively create a 'Christmas Traditions Book' that showcases diverse cultural celebrations, featuring their artwork and written summaries. Throughout the project, they will develop and refine these summaries and illustrations, guided by peer and teacher feedback. The final product will be presented during the 'Christmas Traditions Gallery Walk,' where students will engage visitors with interactive elements and share insights into the significance of each tradition.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Christmas Around the World' exhibition where students create and present artwork and summaries of Christmas stories from various cultures. Invite families and community members to attend, encouraging students to share their insights and discoveries. This engaging event sets the stage for exploring diverse holiday traditions and sparks curiosity about global celebrations.

Exhibition

Arrange a 'Christmas Traditions Gallery Walk' where students display their artwork and written summaries on poster boards. Students will guide visitors through their learning journey with interactive elements like quizzes or matching games. This exhibition will serve as a platform for students to share their understanding of diverse Christmas traditions and stories, fostering a sense of accomplishment and community engagement.
