Purpose

Students will engage in a dynamic, hands-on exploration of engineering and mathematics through the design and construction of cable-stayed bridge models. By collaborating with peers and mentors, they will deepen their understanding of structural principles and material properties, while honing research and critical thinking skills. This project fosters creativity and problem-solving as students tackle real-world challenges, culminating in a community showcase that highlights their innovative solutions and learning journey.

Learning goals

Students will develop an understanding of the engineering principles and mathematical concepts involved in designing cable-stayed bridges. They will learn to gather and evaluate information from diverse sources, enhancing their research and critical thinking skills. Through hands-on model construction and peer collaboration, students will refine their ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical challenges. They will also strengthen their communication skills by presenting their designs and findings to peers and community partners.
Standards
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.WHST.6-8.8 - Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.8.9 - Analyze a case in which two or more texts provide conflicting information on the same topic and identify where the texts disagree on matters of fact or interpretation.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.8.3 - Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.5 - Develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
  • [Common Core] CCSS.ELA-Literacy.CCRA.W.7 - Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will construct a scale model of a cable-stayed bridge using materials like balsa wood, string, and cardboard, showcasing their understanding of engineering principles and mathematical concepts. Throughout the project, students will document their design process and calculations in a project journal, which will include sketches, reflections, and revisions. At the 'Bridge Builders Expo', students will present their completed models, demonstrating their load-bearing capacity and explaining the mathematical reasoning behind their design choices.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Bridge Design Challenge' where students collaborate in teams to brainstorm and sketch initial designs for their cable-stayed bridge models. Each team will incorporate basic mathematical calculations and design ideas, using provided materials to visualize their concepts. This engaging activity will set the stage for the project's hands-on learning experience and encourage students to think creatively about engineering solutions.

Exhibition

Students will present their cable-stayed bridge models and simulations at a 'Bridge Builders Expo', inviting parents, community members, and university partners to engage with their work. Each student will explain their design process, highlighting the mathematical principles and engineering concepts applied. The exhibition will include interactive demonstrations where attendees can test the load-bearing capacity of the models, fostering a dynamic and informative experience.
