Purpose

This project aims to cultivate empathy, creativity, and problem-solving skills in students by immersing them in hands-on design experiences inspired by literature. Through collaborative design sprints, students will identify challenges faced by characters in stories and develop innovative solutions that can be applied to real-world contexts. By engaging with diverse narratives and utilizing the design process, students will enhance their critical thinking, teamwork, and communication skills, fostering a deeper understanding of how design can impact their communities.

Learning goals

Students will develop empathy and creativity by analyzing characters and challenges in diverse stories, applying these insights to design meaningful solutions. They will engage in the design process, enhancing their skills in prototyping, measurement, and geometry, while fostering teamwork and communication. Through reflection and peer feedback, students will refine their solutions, gaining self-directed learning competencies and understanding real-world applications of their designs.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] 3-5.AF.1.5 - Define a simple design problem that can be solved through the development of an object, tool, process, or system and includes several criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create a 'Book Character Solution Kit,' consisting of tools or inventions designed to address specific challenges faced by characters in their favorite stories. These kits will be developed through a series of design sprints, allowing students to prototype and refine their ideas using recycled materials. The kits will be showcased during a Gallery Walk and a Storybook Solutions Fair, where students present their designs and explain the real-world applications of their projects to peers, family, and community members.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a dynamic 'Design Sprint Relay,' where students rotate through stations that each focus on a different phase of the design process. Begin with empathy mapping, where students explore characters' challenges from diverse stories shared by local librarians. Move to ideation, where students brainstorm creative solutions, and conclude with prototyping, using recycled materials to create tangible models. This collaborative activity introduces students to the full cycle of design thinking in an engaging and hands-on manner.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Storybook Solutions Fair,' inviting family and community members to explore their Book Character Solution Kits. Each student will set up interactive booths, showcasing their prototypes and explaining their design process and the real-world applications of their projects. This event will foster dialogue between students and visitors, encouraging feedback and reflection on the impact of their creative solutions.
