Purpose

This project immerses students in the dynamics of the legal system through a mock trial, fostering critical thinking and effective communication skills. By role-playing various court positions, students explore multiple perspectives and solutions, aligning with the National Core Arts Standards. The experience encourages self-directed learning and academic mindset development, as students reflect on their roles and contributions. Through collaborative problem-solving, students engage with complex questions relevant to their communities, enhancing their content expertise and sense of belonging.

Learning goals

Students will explore the intricacies of the legal system by engaging in a mock trial, where they will assume various court roles and responsibilities. They will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they analyze the fictional case, considering multiple perspectives and solutions. Through self-directed learning and effective communication, students will practice public speaking, reflect on their performances, and receive feedback from peers and teachers. This project will foster a sense of identity and belonging, encouraging students to engage in meaningful work that connects to their community.

Products

Students will collaboratively develop and present a mock trial, complete with scripted roles such as attorneys, witnesses, and jury members. Throughout the project, they will create detailed character profiles and case briefs to support their roles. The final product will be a recorded video of the trial, showcasing their understanding of the legal system and their ability to communicate effectively. Additionally, students will produce reflective journals documenting their learning process and insights gained from peer feedback and self-reflection.

Launch

Begin with an interactive courtroom visit, either virtually or in-person, where students can observe real-life legal proceedings and engage with professionals in various court roles. Follow this with a classroom discussion where students share their observations and insights, setting the stage for their upcoming roles in the mock trial. This experience will spark curiosity and provide a foundational understanding of the legal system's dynamics, encouraging students to consider multiple perspectives and solutions in their upcoming project.

Exhibition

At the culmination of the mock trial project, students will present their case in a simulated courtroom setting, inviting peers, teachers, and family members to observe. Each student will exhibit their understanding of their assigned roles by performing their duties in the trial, showcasing their critical thinking and communication skills. Following the trial, students will engage in a reflective discussion, sharing insights and feedback on their performance and the overall experience. Additionally, students will create a visual display or digital presentation summarizing their learning journey, highlighting key moments and reflections from the project.
