Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage students in a hands-on exploration of the United States' involvement in World War I, fostering a deeper understanding of global conflicts and their societal impacts. Students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills as they investigate historical events through interactive projects, such as visual maps and timelines. By reflecting on their learning journey and collaborating on a mural, students will build self-directed learning capabilities and establish a sense of identity and belonging within the historical narrative.

Learning goals

Students will understand the complex web of global alliances and conflicts leading to the United States' involvement in World War I. They will develop skills in critical thinking and problem-solving by analyzing the motivations and consequences of the U.S. entry into the war. Products

Students will collaboratively create a mural that visually narrates the key moments and figures involved in the United States' entry into WWI. This mural will be displayed in a common area of the school, allowing students to share their understanding of the historical impact with the wider school community. Additionally, students will produce a timeline project using multimedia tools, which they will present to the class, showcasing the key events leading to the U.S. involvement in WWI.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'History Detectives' scavenger hunt. Students will search for clues and artifacts related to the United States' entry into WWI, scattered around the classroom or school. As they uncover each clue, they will piece together the timeline and motivations behind the U.S. decision to enter the war, setting the stage for deeper exploration and understanding.

Exhibition

Host a school-wide 'History Day' where students present their collaborative murals and timeline projects in a dedicated exhibition space. Invite peers, teachers, and family members to explore the visual maps and multimedia presentations, encouraging discussions about the United States' role in WWI. Incorporate interactive stations where visitors can engage with the 'History Detectives' scavenger hunt artifacts, fostering a deeper understanding of the historical context and decisions leading to the U.S. entry into the war.
