Purpose

This project aims to immerse kindergarten students in a dynamic exploration of nature and self-expression through art and movement. By engaging with natural materials, sensory experiences, and creative performances, students will develop a deeper understanding of their emotions and the world around them. The project fosters self-directed learning, encouraging students to reflect, receive feedback, and express their ideas in innovative ways, while meeting key science standards and competencies.

Learning goals

Students will explore and express their emotions and ideas through art, movement, and sensory experiences, enhancing their understanding of self-expression and personal reflection. They will engage with nature to observe patterns and changes, using these observations to inspire creative projects and performances. Through collaboration with community partners, students will develop skills in art and music, fostering an appreciation for natural elements and auditory patterns. The project will encourage self-directed learning, with students actively using feedback and reflection to guide their learning journey.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] K-2.AF.6.3 - Generate and/or compare multiple solutions to a problem.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.

Products

Students will create a series of short movement performances inspired by natural elements, expressing emotions through dance, which will be featured in the 'Feelings and Movement Showcase.' They will also design a sensory exploration station to display their findings and reflections from the 'Senses Exploration Day,' inviting visitors to engage with different sensory experiences. Additionally, students will collaborate on a mural using natural materials like leaves and stones to represent their observations of nature, showcasing their teamwork and creativity.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Creative Movement Workshop' where students explore expressing emotions through dance and movement, inspired by elements of the natural world. Encourage students to observe nature through a short walk, collecting items like leaves or stones, which they can use as inspiration for their movements. This interactive session will set the stage for the project by sparking curiosity and helping students connect their emotions with the natural environment.

Exhibition

The exhibition will feature a 'Nature and Art Gallery Walk' where students display their art pieces crafted from natural materials, inviting parents and community members to engage with the young artists about their creative process. Additionally, a 'Feelings and Movement Showcase' will be arranged, where students perform movement pieces expressing emotions inspired by their interactions with nature, presented to classmates and family. This dual exhibition provides a platform for students to share their artistic and expressive journeys, highlighting their learning and creativity.
