Purpose

The purpose of this learning experience is to engage 10th-grade students in a comprehensive exploration of physical wellness, integrating sleep, nutrition, exercise, and substance awareness into their daily lives. Through hands-on projects, community partnerships, and reflective practices, students will develop personalized wellness plans that promote lifelong healthy habits. This unit aims to foster critical thinking, effective communication, and self-directed learning, empowering students to make informed choices about their health and well-being.

Learning goals

Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of physical wellness by exploring essential sleep hygiene, balanced nutrition, appropriate exercise, and substance awareness. They will apply critical thinking to design personal wellness plans, integrating these components to enhance their daily lives. Through collaboration with community partners and school services, students will refine their communication skills by presenting and justifying their wellness strategies. The project will foster self-directed learning and reflection, encouraging students to continuously assess and improve their health practices.

Products

Students will collaboratively design and present a healthy school lunch menu, complete with visual displays explaining the nutritional benefits of each dish. They will create posters for each table in the dining hall, detailing the components of a balanced meal and the rationale behind their choices. Additionally, students will develop interactive exhibits for a wellness fair, showcasing their findings on physical wellness through engaging demonstrations.

Launch

Kick off the unit with a "Wellness Scavenger Hunt" across the school campus. Students will visit key locations such as the health center, dining hall, and athletic department to gather information and insights about health and wellness practices. At each stop, they will engage with staff, ask questions, and collect clues that will help them begin to design their personal wellness plans. This interactive activity will spark curiosity and lay the foundation for their exploration of physical wellness throughout the term.

Exhibition

Students will host a 'Culinary Wellness Night,' collaborating with school dining services to prepare and serve a menu featuring their proposed nutritious dishes. Each dish will be accompanied by a presentation where students share the health benefits and inspirations behind their creations. Attendees, including peers, family members, and community partners, will engage with students through interactive displays and discussions, fostering a deeper understanding of the importance of integrating wellness into daily life.
