Purpose

This project aims to immerse young students in the fascinating world of plants, fostering curiosity and understanding of how plant parts function together to ensure growth and survival. Through hands-on activities, community engagement, and creative expression, students will develop critical thinking skills and a sense of belonging to their environment. The experience encourages self-directed learning and reflection, as students explore the interconnectedness of nature and their own personal growth.

Learning goals

Students will explore how different plant parts function collaboratively to support growth and survival, aligning with the essential question. They will develop models and engage with community partners to deepen understanding of plant needs and their environments. Through hands-on activities and reflection, students will enhance self-directed learning, critical thinking, and academic mindset competencies. They will also build communication skills by presenting their findings at the 'Plant Parts Fair' and 'Botanical Bazaar'.
Standards
  • [Kentucky] K-LS1-1 - Use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including humans) need to survive.
  • [Kentucky] K-ESS3-1 - Use a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants and animals (including humans) and the places they live.
  • [Kentucky] 2-LS2-2 - Develop a simple model that mimics the function of an animal in dispersing seeds or pollinating plants.*
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create detailed plant models using recycled materials, showcasing the functions of different plant parts. They will also craft plant-themed art pieces, such as leaf rubbings or seed mosaics, to display at the Botanical Bazaar. Additionally, students will develop interactive storytelling presentations that narrate the life cycle of a plant, integrating their observations from the community garden field trip. These products will be shared with peers, family members, and community partners during the Plant Parts Fair and Botanical Bazaar exhibitions.

Launch

Kick off the learning experience with a 'Garden Exploration Workshop' where students visit various stations to engage with real plant parts. Each station will focus on a different plant part's function, allowing students to touch, smell, and explore through interactive activities. This hands-on exploration will spark curiosity and set the stage for deeper learning about how plants grow and thrive.

Exhibition

The 'Botanical Bazaar' will be an interactive showcase where students proudly present their plant models crafted from recycled materials. Each booth will feature engaging activities such as seed planting and plant-themed art, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding of plant parts and their functions. Visitors, including family and community members, will be invited to explore the exhibits and engage with students, fostering a sense of community and shared learning.
