Purpose

This Mars-themed photography project aims to immerse 7th-grade students in a creative exploration of the Martian environment through the lens of photography and digital editing. By integrating scientific research and artistic expression, students will develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while engaging with real-world concepts related to Mars. The project fosters self-directed learning and academic mindset by encouraging students to reflect on their artistic choices and collaborate with peers, ultimately producing a compelling visual narrative that connects to themes from 'The Martian.'

Learning goals

Students will develop skills in photography and digital editing, using cameras and software tools like Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop to creatively represent the Martian landscape. They will analyze and interpret data about Mars to inform their artistic choices, integrating scientific understanding with visual storytelling. Through self-directed learning and critical reflection, students will enhance their ability to evaluate and improve their work, fostering a deeper sense of identity and belonging within their learning community.
Standards
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-ESS1-3 - Analyze and interpret data to determine scale properties of objects in the solar system.
  • [National Core Arts Standards] MA:Pr6.1.7.b - Evaluate the results of and improvements for presenting media artworks, considering impacts on personal growth.
  • [Next Generation Science Standards] MS-ESS1-1 - Develop and use a model of the Earth-sun-moon system to describe the cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons.
Competencies
  • Self Directed Learning - Students use teacher and peer feedback and self-reflection to monitor and direct their own learning while building self knowledge both in and out of the classroom.
  • Academic Mindset - Students establish a sense of place, identity, and belonging to increase self-efficacy while engaging in critical reflection and action.
  • Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Students consider a variety of innovative approaches to address and understand complex questions that are authentic and important to their communities.

Products

Students will create a digital photo gallery exhibition that showcases their edited images of Mars, accompanied by artist statements that articulate the narrative and technical choices behind each photo. Throughout the project, students will maintain a reflection journal documenting their artistic process, challenges faced, and solutions found. They will also develop a Mars Mood Board, which will serve as a visual guide and inspiration for their photographic storytelling. These products will demonstrate students' ability to integrate scientific research with artistic expression, as well as their growth in self-directed learning and critical thinking.

Launch

Kick off the project with a 'Mars Mood Board Creation' session where students gather and curate images, colors, and textures that represent their personal vision of Mars. Encourage students to explore various sources such as NASA images, science fiction art, and scenes from 'The Martian' to inspire their boards. This activity will set the tone for the project, allowing students to visually express their initial ideas and set a creative direction for their photography work.

Exhibition

Students will curate a digital photo gallery exhibition that showcases their edited images of Mars, accompanied by artist statements explaining the techniques used and the story behind each photo. The exhibition will be shared with peers, teachers, and family members, either through an online platform or a classroom presentation. This event will provide an opportunity for students to receive feedback, celebrate their creative achievements, and reflect on their learning journey.
